Install Redhat 9
 

OK, I have downloaded the shrike-i386 ISO files fresh from the redhat website. I burned the files onto the appropriate cd's using the windows built in burner ( just copying the file ). I changed my BIOS to boot from cd first and I KNOW that it works because i just installed xp pro on this machine. Either way, I would like to know why the Install program does not autorun, or run at all for that matter.

384 megs RAMBUS
Gforce 4 TI 4600
Soundblaster generic
80gig HD [ first partition is 6 gigs for xp ( using rest of the first 1024 cylinders for linux, or 4 gigs roughly )
partitions are set up: ( in gigs )
6 ntfs (xp pro)
10 unformatted ( for linux i hope)
rest is still raw, i will probly make one 10gig sector for etc3 and the rest ntfs.

when you browse the cds do you see the iso or the contents of the redhat cd?

I see the ISO file shrike-i386-disc1.iso

i don't think you can burn iso images onto cd's with the built in windows burner. may look in help file. the iso is an image of the disk. when burnt onto cd you should see the folders and files that were made into the iso. meaning you should see directories like RedHat, dosutils, etc.

So i need to download a program that will burn it onto the cd as an actual image correct?

this i found on another forum. an iso is sort of like a zip file. it doesn't compress though, as far as i know. it just packs everything into one file, so that you don't have to download each file individually. like zip is to put multiple files into one file for easy transfer of multiple files via email, etc.

burning iso's
 

With roxio CD burning software, I believe the option is under

file --> create CD image

You are then presented with a window which allows you to choose .iso format.

I would be surprised if your software did not allow you the choice of burning CD images. Poke around.

ehawk is correct. the .iso files are complete disk images, not directories. The mentioned Roxio option grabs a image file, and burns it as a complete disk.

If you plan to keep XP, an excellent app that will burn iso's and create virtual cd images is Alcohol. There is no way to burn a disk from an iso image built in to WInXp
