It takes guts to know this...and guts to even want to try THIS...
Compiling a kernel is not really noob stuff, ask me, I should know. That's where I started out...with all the frusty that came along with it...

There is at least one page on this, a simple search (ixquick is the one I use) revealed quite some stuff.
You may have to install the compiler first, though. What's the distro you've got there? To find out, enter this in the console...

uname -a
Do you have any cosmic reasons to recompile the kernel? If not, venture into something else. How about one of the GNU packages instead?

By the way, it helps us help you if you'd pad the question a bit...

And...the magic word still is please

Try:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
I am not a Backtrack user, though, so it might be bad advice.

If you are a newbie than Backtrack might not be the best place to start with, since it is aimed at network and security experts.
But anyways, Backtrack 5 is a derivative of Ubuntu, but not compatible with it anymore. Try the advice given to you by snowpine, it should work. If it does not work I would change to a general purpose distro.
