Install KDE4 and all needed libraries in the same prefix as for KDE3 simultaneously

I'm gonna compile and install KDE4. But i already have KDE3 installed in /usr. Is it safe to install qt4, kde4 etc. in the same prefix, i.e. won't it replace any old installation and make previously installed programs unstartable?

It depends on how you have compiled things, but kde-4.2 will complicate things
