I am doing a new RH8 install on an older P3/450 GatewayE-5200 computer. It has an IDE Harddrive. I've installed RH ok on SCSI boxes never IDE. This is different, It won't find the CD-ROM install#1 CD didsetup changes but no go)... so ok, no biggie, I made the boot floppy, copied boot.img from my CD#1 and started install. It loads at boot: vmlinuz and initrd.img and asks me from a RH screen to <enter>for an install, GREAT! I start with English language and keyboard...
but then the third page asks me ~Local CDROM or HardDrive~? I choose Local CDROM, 4th page? is What type of CDROM do U have? Only choice offerred is ~SCSI~ hmmm...I got an IDE system here right where's that CDROM choice? I continue, ok 5th page it offers me 4 SCSI driver choices the drivers... Adaptec, MegaRadi etc... (it does have a toggle to {specify module parameters} whatzat4 Idunno?
Meanwhile, ALL 4 driver choices route me back to page 3 eventually it doesn't continue...Ok, I have an IDE CDROM? right, not SCSI but there is no way to go there that I see? I would apreciate a little direction to the soluton? Once it finds the IDE CDROM and uses CD#1 install and begins an install from there, I'd think all would be keen.
thanks,

I am not sure if this will work, but if I recall correctly, when first booting the kernel there is something like "press F11 for kernel boot options" or somesuch. There may be a kernel option to disable scsi. Perhaps this will clue in the kernel about your ide system.
Also, it may be worth poking around your BIOS to be sure there are no fishy cdrom settings.
the error was mine entirely, not Linux for once? there was a zip drive on that box and when I unplugged it from the cable all went perfect, CDRom for install... it apparently got in the way on that machine, I've done 3 more Gateways E 44-55 series today and the rest went fine with or without the Zips in place? other issues GUI screw ups etc. Quien Sabe...appreciate the thought o BIOS etc... and yes, a BIOS or a setup error was my thought... as soon as I had done the install WRONG 4x... well, right away I decided it could be a HW glitch... I R an A+ kinda guy, software is ALL voodoo but metal and plastic and electrons and silicon... now there's good stuff... Using discarded biz boxes I'm building a little network for some mentally challenged local folks. figuring to add some Linux paint program...and simple letter and math matching stuff etc... and GAMES... which will be the hit I betcha. As for me, it's a way to learn a lot more about loading Linux on other boxes (I R an IBM SCSI text guy totally for my server) Well, enjoy and thanks,
