before I get jumped on (again) I found this:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i586.rpm.html
and I ran yum install clonezilla-3.3.18-1pclos2013.i586.rpm
it looked like it was going great but stopped with 'No package partclone available'. If I have a breakthrough I'll post back.

to all you naysayers out there: I did it. I installed clonezilla with yum. Here are the (basic) steps (as best as I can remember).
yum install glibc-devel e2fsprogs-devel
wget ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/carroll.c...012.0.i586.rpm
rpm-ivh partclone-0.2.48-1-mdv2012.0.i586.rpm
wget ftp://ftp.is.co.za/mirror/pclinuxos....s2013.i586.rpm
yum install clonezilla-3.3.18-1pclos2013.i586.rpm
at the end of it all, type #clonezilla in a console and the clonezilla program starts up in a window.
is it a straightforward install? certainly not, each step complains about missing bits but these bits can be found with a google search. Enjoy torturing yourself.

edit: the following lines may help when searching for the missing bits:

wget http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel...3.el6.i686.rpm
rpm -ivh ntfsprogs-2.0.0-13.el6.i686.rpm

wget http://www.udpcast.linux.lu/download...424-1.i686.rpm
yum install udpcast-20120424-1.i686.rpm

wget ftp://ftp.is.co.za/mirror/pclinuxos....s2013.i586.rpm
yum install mkswap-uuid-0.1.1-1pclos2013.i586.rpm

for drbl:
wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pro...mirror=surfnet
yum install drbl-2.4.17-drbl1.noarch.rpm

Mondo Rescue can do hot backups, although you'd want to minimize num of processes running and either stop or separately backup any RDBMSes.
It would also be able to backup that usb.
It's rpm based

I saw those RPM's but they're for mandriva and pclinuxos, so I'd never recommend installing them on an alternative distribution. However if it went in happily enough, then so be it.
