You didn't really give any information to go on in your question. Please learn how to get good answers with your questions about Linux

All I can suggest is to check the Red Hat 9.0 Release Notes and see if you meet the minimum hardware requirements for the type of installation you are using. You might want to post your hardware specs, the installation method, media source, etc.

Are you booting from a floppy? I think that your kernel image is corrupt. If you are booting from a floppy, change the image(usually vmlinuz with the working kernel image, you can copy the image from the installation CD).If your kernel image in the Harddisk is corrupt(most likely due to disk failure or corruption,(eg badblocks)) replace the kernel image in your /boot directory.

i'm using a brand new pc, and a disk bought from amazon, i'm using the instalation method i'm using is typing mem=1024m at the prompt, cos all other commands makes the machine just reboot.

my hardware: via p4pb ultra, p4x400 chipset, p4 2.8ghz 512mb ddr x2, maxtor 200gb hdd, leadtek 256mb agp 8x

rch 07-15-2003 08:50 AM

well you don't have 1024 of mem .Clearly your computer should work with the usual kernel, and I think that there is no need for mem=1024.Is
uncompressing linux...ok loading kernel the only message,or does it end with something like init not found etc.

richcase 07-15-2003 09:07 AM

it does'nt end with init or kernel, i have had messages like that before, and i know i have 2048m of ram but when i tell it that it just reboots

rch 07-15-2003 09:15 AM

I am awfully sorry that I did not see the x2 after the ddr part.I thought that you had 512 mb of ram .I have a habit of answering the questions with only a cursory glance ,that makes me miss some points. As I said you don't need to add mem=1024 (if you have 512*2 memory then you would have 1024 mem isn't it),the kernel(rh9 installation) would detect that memory. So again I think that you have a corrupt cd or you need special drivers for your device.Did you buy the cd from the market or you just downloaded and burned it.Do you know how to make installation floppies?
