Inputting Japanese

Right now I am running Slackware upgraded to slackware-current and am wishing to have something similar to the Microsoft IME so that I may type in Japanese. I've been looking into various options such as Canna and kinput2, but am rather confused as to not only where to get these, but also how to install, configure, and use them. I already have Japanese fonts installed for X and they're working just fine, but have no way of inputting them outside of Kiten.

Mainly I'm wanting to type in Japanese in Firefox, kwrite, and OpenOffice. I use KDE 3.3.1 for my GUI.

Where should I start with these programs, and more importantly what is the easiest way to get this all up and running? Or is there anything better that I should know about?
