Inkscape/Illustrator interoperability

Is it possible to create adobe illustrator files from Inkscape? I love inkscape, but i exported some .svg files and took them to a friend who had Illustrator, and they didnt render properly. Is there something I'm missing? Isnt illustrator supposed to open .svg file without a problem? I even gave him the font used, as this particulr file had some text in it as well, and it still didnt look right.

Thanks,
-myk
