Info regarding multimedia applications

I wud like to knw applications for media file converter and vcd cutter used in Ubuntu 8.10, coz i knw only pytube for conversion, can anybody suggest which wud serve the best for cutting and conversion

for audio/video there is mencoder ,works great.
and there always is Cinelerra
