Without knowing what you are missing, it is hard to say, because there could be other non-graphically components missing. You may want to burn a new disc; the one that has the KDE rpms on it, and then uninstall KDE and reinstall it. You could also download the KDE packages from an OpenSUSE mirror site, and add the directory where you downloaded them to as an installation source. That would allow using YaST2 to install them.

If you press [ALT]-[F2] and get a run dialog, then you could enter "kdesu /sbin/yast2 sw_single" to manually start the yast2 software installation module. Then enter a search term for "KDE" to see which components were installed and which weren't.

An alternative could be to create a new user and see of the new user has the same problem. Maybe some process was interupted and the KDE skeleton files normally created for a new user were not in your case.

If you have a broadband connection, you could also download OpenSUSE 10.1 or 10.2. I don't know if the repositories supply the 9.1 versions anymore.
Replacing the bad disk and reinstalling may actually get the job done faster and easier.

thanks for the reply.

The thing is that i do have Suse 10 iso's but the problem is that i dont want to burn 5 cds. I would like to install it with one cd. But i have'ne found any place which explains this clearly. Can you please tell me how to install this Suse 10, or rather upgrade the 9.1 which i have installed. The suse 10 iso's are on a comp running windows, of which i can start a ftp server. I dont know how to get the comp start the install from the ftp.

Plz help.

Do you have the first CD image burned?

There is a manual in the docu/ folder that has installation instructions, including how to install using ftp. I don't know if you can install from the ISO images on ftp. You can if they were on a drive such as a usb drive.

Here are SuSE 10.1 instructions for installing without a cdrom:
http://en.opensuse.org/Installation_...e_installation

Here is the newbie guide to ftp installation:
http://opensuse.us/viewtopic.php?t=149

Notice that one of the network options is smb:
If you mounted the directory the iso images are on, you may be able to enter the url for the share including the first iso filename in full.
Using a hard drive or usb drive as a source, you can do it this way.

The network install option will ask for the IP address of the ftp site.
Enter your windows computer's IP address. Then enter the path including the isoname, like this
You could try the form
/path/SUSECDs/SUSE-Linux-10.0-GM-i386-CD1.iso when prompted for the information.
I don't know if this will work however. And it is based on 10.1 instructions which may be different then 10.0.

You can update packages this way by adding the smb or ftp share as an installation source and clicking on the "is an iso image" button. So you could install a minimal system from the first CD, set up installation sources to use your ftp or smb service of the windows computer and then run "#/sbin/yast2 sw_single" to select and add other packages.

It this all is too much of a hastle, then you can fall back to burning all the CD's.

I have got suse 10.0 isos in D:\suse\ folder

But they have got funny names. Guess the guy who got them for me just put his own names in like SU1000.iso and all that stuff.

Anyway, there are five isos. So i got GRUB for NT and got the GRUB to boot with the kernel and ramdisk provided on the first iso.

Then a menu comes and asks how do you want to install.

I say i want to install using harddisk.

It says choose you partition and i choose hdc5 ntfs

then it says enter the source directory and i put /suse/ and then it says could not find the images.

What am i doing wrong??

Plz help.

and sorry i made a new post of this because i could not find this one.
