Improving scanned images in linux

I was just using my scanner from within linux the other day and I was at odds as to how to improve the scanned image. I'm looking all over the xsane interface and can't find the filter to remove the patterns one would see from within windoze if no filters were applied. The raw image looked like poop. My question is where is that particular filter(moire pattern remover?)? Is it in gimp or somewhere else? Secondly, are there comparable noise filters for gimp along the lines of noise ninja or others filters like dce tools. Both of which are for windoze. The steps given to remove noise from within gimp just doesn't produce the same kind of results. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong. A little help here is needed big time. That !@#$% scanner cost me a couple hundred dollars almost and I don't wanna go back to that other os because I can't improve scanned images a different way.

try saving as a .jpg (not .pnm) also try bumping the scan resolution up to 400 DPI or higher. you can always scale the image down or crop it later...
