Neither Kuickview nor Kview consistently show previews of .jpg's and .tif's when I'm running the "open" dialogue (I've checked in "settings" that preview is enabled, by the way). Sometimes, Kview will give a thumbnail of the smaller files, but usually, I just get the icon of a broken file.
Admittedly, even the .jpg's are rather large: 2-4 Mb, but Irfanview under win98 on my dualboot system shows previews for everything: even for a 14Mb tiff, one appears in a blink. This also suggests it's not a problem of my hardware configuration.
Another annoyance: neither of the KDE viewers will display .psd images.
I've heard that Xnview comes closest to Irfanview, but, as a debian user, I'm reluctant to install something which is not on sarge, or even etch.
...any suggestions gratefully received, and in any case, thanks for your attention!

...haven't tried it yet (I'm not at home), but that looks like a very valuable tip - I wish I could express my gratitude in Greek, but failing that...thanks a million!
yes, that was the solution - many thanks, once again.
The KDE viewers are still not as snappy as Irfanview, perhaps because that uses a predefined, fixed preview size. Found adjusting the size of the preview in Kuickview quite awkward. But they show one for 14mb tiff's almost faster than 3mb jpg's.
Might try Xnview later with time and an adventurous spirit....
