image to ascii arts converter, anyone?

hi there:

i am looking for program that can convert image(jpeg, png) into ascii arts. can anyone point me to the right direction?

i thought of looking for gimp plug-in that can do that and i found this AA plugin at:

http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=253

but i am not too sure if this is it and how to compile it into gimp.

many thanks

You're looking for the aalib library. Just google for that name and you should quickly find it. It comes with example programs and demo's for displaying ascii art to the console, including animations. Its mainly for C program developers. I had to get and install it to compile Quake-2, but have never actually used it.

Mabe this might work. graphics and ascii formats are quite
different, so half expect failure.

I'm running this one for a check it out moment, its in my repo, but Arch got it listed in a post. It's running through a batch of images .. looks chafa, so its lives up to its name.

just for a, you didn't ask for it bonus.

14 years later, there's a lot of libraries/software that can do that for you.
Code:
libcaca, jp2a ...
