Image programs crashing

I need to crop something in gimp, si u selected the selection rectangle tool, and as soon as i clicked on the image, gimp crashed. i ran it form a temrinal and got this error:

The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device'.
(Details: serial 40465 error_code 140 request_code 151 minor_code 13)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

(script-fu:30139): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: script-fu: wire_read(): error

so i tried inkscape, and it crashed when i selected the image. i didnt even select a tool in the toolbar, i just clicked the image i opened and it crashed.

im running debian sid, moved from debian etch.

come on, i just settled into debian and this is the one essential thing i need that isnt working. dont tell me i have to get a new distro, or go back to windows.

i already compiled gimp 2.3 from source, and it gets the same error. am i screwed?

I'm using version 2.2.8 and have no problems with creating an image, selecting a rectangle with the selection tool and clicking on the image. It does says that it is an error from the X system so maybe you should update XFree86 (X.org) or something like that. I can't reproduce the problem so I really can't exactly tell.
