I'm sprucing up my fresh install of Ubuntu. I got fed up with KDE so, decieding I didn't want the reminents of KDE floating on my Desktop, I blew it all away and started over. So now i'm trying to make my icons look right. So my first real question is

Do my icons have to be in the *.xpm format? Can they be *.svg as well?

Which leads to my next question. I found a firefox icon that I like alot. Its in *.svg, so if I shouldn't use the *.svg format

What program can I use to convert it to *.xpm? Gimp dosen't recgonize the *.svg format.

.svg is a vector graphics format, which is why GIMP won't read it. You'll need something like Inkscape.
