If I use MTR when SUed into root, am I at risk on the net?

Hey folks,

I only know of the program MTR to do trace routes and to ping IP addresses. In Windows I'd oped up the MSDos prompt. In Linux, I only know about MTR. And it ONLY works when I SU into root.

So, am I at risk on the net when SUed into root to use MTR?

as long as you have up to date version it's ok
well written programms that you start as root (so it can use raw sockets)
drop the root privledge in child proccesses like connections
so root is not actually exposed to the web
