Icewm doesn't set background

According to the docs icewmbg needs to be ran before icewm gets started but from where? I'm using xdm and it apparemtly doesn't care about what .xinitrc has to say.

I should add that this is on Debian SID and on previous installs of icewm I haven't had such troubles.

Solved. Seems Debian sets up several symlinks to get icewm started so I simply removed one and created ~/.xsession

rm -rf /etc/alternatives/x-window-manager

touch .xsession

Add the following:
icewmbg&
/usr/bin/icewm
