IBM Websphere Woes, app window disappears or locks up

I am striving to get out of the uSoft business and that includes my web development efforts.

I just bought IBM Websphere for Linux version 4.0 and I am having some rather weird behavior problems from it.

I should confess that I am a Newbie and the platform I am using is RH9 on an Athlon 2GHz processor with a ton of memory.

I downloaded and installed the demo application and the Keio U version of WINE that is suggested by IBM. That really didn't work so well; assuming it was some sort of cripple-ware, I decided to buy it because the part of the demo that "worked" looked OK.

I have uninstalled the demo version as root and reinstalled with the -ivh --force switches. I got a different WINE RPM from RH and tried that after uninstalling the Keio version. Then I reinstalled the Keio version and reinstalled the RPMs from the commercial version.

Now you are up to date.

The application will run from /usr/bin in terminal with the command hpbuilder -e. Some of the other switches do nothing (e.g., the -g switch which is supposed to open the online user's guide. The -f switch opens the file transfer application but when I tell it to connect to my website it disappears. The -t switch opens the multimedia presentation but it runs for a while and then disappears.

If anyone has any input on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Bill

I have discovered some relevant info for RH9 users

The issue appears to be that there is not currently a version of WINE for RH9. Actually, this comes down to the glibc-2.3 compatability (if this is not phrased correctly, please realize that I am a newbie so I don't really know what it means, except that I know that it's relevant).

It so happens that I have a RH8 laptop, too. I could not get the Keio version of WINE to install on that box, but the RH8 version installed just fine.

I installed the Websphere stuff on the laptop and it now appears to be working just fine, or at least as far as I can tell in just a few minutes of testing.

If anyone hears of a version of glibc-2.3 that a newbie could use (loosely translated, RPM or tar.gz), please post it here.

Thanks, all...

Bill
