i3status not working

I finally got around to customizing my .config/i3status/config file, but now it's not working. I commented out most everything but ipv6 and still nothing happens. Can anyone tell me why?

What exactly does not work? Is your i3bar configured to use i3status output? Do you get error messages on the terminal you started i3 from? Do you get any output in your i3bar, corrupted output, ... .
Please be more verbose what exactly is happening.

I know the file is used by i3bar because when I made one small change it made a difference when I restarted X. I don't get any error messages, or any corrupted output, it just displays nothing.

Edit: I turned it on today and it started working. No idea why.
