i386,i586, or x86??

I am running a 3800+ AMD 64 x2 processor on a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo, and I am wondering which architecture I am supposed to use. Is it i386, i586, x86, or is it some other one I have not listed?

P.S. Don't forget Yes on 8

You can use any of the architectures you list.

Your processor is also capable of handling x86_64. So, if you want to run in 64 bits mode, you can use x86_64 as well.

The label depends a bit on the distro you are planning to install. In Debian it would be named i386 for 32-bits and amd64 for 64-bits (not ia64!). For the 32 bits version, the Debian installer is likely to select a kernel best suited for your processor, or you can install it afterwards. The best kernel would be a 686.

There are various opinions about installing 64-bits or not. I am quite happy with it myself, and I can run Flash & Skype etc after installation of the ia32-libs compatibility libs.

I assume Ubuntu uses the same naming labels for their versions. If you have a bit Linux experience I advise in favor of Debian Lenny though.

Oh, well I have Kubuntu 8.10 x86_64 it dosent want to install I think its the disc. I am now planning to install mandriva 2009 Power pack x86_64.

EDIT: I have Mandriva 2009 i586, but after it loads it stops a black screen and all I can do is type. I tried giving it a command like startkde, but it dosent do anything.

@jlinkels

I have experience with linux and have set up a server on ubuntu, but on my desktop I am not very satisfied with ubuntu distros and I am considering a new distro such as mandriva.
