I would like help installing Thunderbird e-mail

I used thunderbird in windows and liked it alot...I downloaded the archive for linux and extracted it. It went into a temp folder. I'm looking at the contents of the temp folder and don't know what to do next....

folder...gconfd-larry
folder...keyring-OEXoev
folder...orbit-larry
folder...ssh-pfbfXw5493
folder...thunderbird
folder...Tracker-larry.5591
folder...virtual-larry.gsaEX7
folder...thunderbird-2.0.0.9.tar.gz
doc?.....mapping-larry

I realize that I'm coming from a windows background, but which one is the script that installs thunderbird. I looked in the thunderbird folder and it contained:

folders and files that comprise thunderbird, and several bin files, and 2 executable files...

run-mozilla.sh

thunderbird

(neither did anything when clicked/double-clicked)

(pardon the ignorance)
All help will be appreciated!

Hi,

You could run thunderbird as normal user from the console by just typing in that folder:
Code:
thunderbird
But you could also install it using the package manager of your distribution, even when I think that you won't have any problems using just that executable, it will be better to install it using the package manager so it can be easily upgraded.

Is package manager add/remove programs?

When I open add/remove programs in Ubuntu the only options I'm offered are the remaining software that came with the distribution. I can't seem to find a way to point it to Thunderbird.

While I'd prefer Thunderbird, I was however able to configure Evolution to get/send my e-mail, so I'm not completely without.

In the package manager, find the setting for repositories and select one or more of the internet addresses. (And UNselect your installation CD). You can search on keywords using the package manager.

Ubuntu now uses Adept by default, but I like Synaptic better. It is probably already installed.

ALWAYS install SW with the package manager if you can. It will save a lot of hassles.
