I want (e.g.) version 2.x.x but yum only gives me 1.x.x

I guess there's something I don't understand about yum. Take Firefox for example. The current version offered for direct download on Mozilla's site is 2.0.0.1. However, when I do a # yum update my installed version becomes 1.5.0.9. (I'm using FC 5 x86_64 that I just installed tonight.)

The thing that's confusing is I thought that yum was all about installing the latest of everything, but apparently not.

I guess it has to do with what repositories yum connects to?? Or is it that as long as I have FC 5 yum will only give up to certain versions and if I want to start getting more recent versions I have to install FC 6?

If someone shed shed some light on this I would be grateful.

Thanks,

E

I am a Fedora 5 user, too, and yum also installs 1.5 here. However, I am quite happy with it since I like 1.5 more than 2.0. However, if you do want the newest Firefox version, you'll either have to find an FC5 repository that serves newer Firefox packages or install it manually from some RPM or even with the normal Firefox installer. As far as I know, the official FC5 repositories don't get updated that much anymore. Moving to FC6 would probably be the best choice if you always want the newest versions.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll look into upgrading to FC 6.
