I wanna play Doom

I'm trying to play the original doom on my Pentium 4 through Mandrake 10.0 Linux. I found instructions on how to do so at http://www.gamers.org/dhs/helpdocs/Linux-DOOM-FAQ.html. Pretty much all of the links there are out of date and the instructions don't seem to be working

I've downloaded the files linuxxdoom, linuxsdoom, and sndserver which I was instructed to do. If I try to run either executable I get the message "cannot execute binary file" If I try to type in "ldd linuxxdoom" it says that it's not a dynamic executable.

I have the wad files for Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom. I'm hoping someone out there has done this before and could help me out.

The funny thing is, I have doom III, and I got that working under linux with no problems .

Thanks

how are you trying to run it exactly? are you using the full path or are changing to the parent directory and then typing 'doom' (or whatever the exectubale command is)?

if you're doing the latter, you need to prepend './' to the executable filename.

ex.

[prompt @ localhost doom1] $ ./doom

theres plenty of doom ports, i know on gentoo the install system did everything, but look at other ports .... there prboom, legacydoom ... and a few others

also maybe check out cube, the terrain or whatever it you call the map layouts look better then in doom (i think), but the monsters, and sound and overall game play is very similar to dooms

I have tried putting ./ before the command which is "linuxxdoom'. Otherwise it just tells me that it doesn't exist.

I didn't know there were other ports. When I did a sear that web site was all that I got to come up that didn't involve doom 3, which I already managed to get working. I'll check that out and see what I can find out.

The one thing that I want to make sure of is that I get something that uses the WAD files. Because I want to get all versions of doom working, not just the original.

I tried legacy doom and I got it working without a hitch. It's pretty cool, it even lets you raise the recolution higher then it used to be able to and incorporate opengl.

Thanks for the suggestion. I figured someone else would know how to get play doom. I'm sure I'm not the only linux doom fan.
