I seem to have screwed up my computer...
Alright here's what I did(which was really stupid, so if you don't have anything helpful to say don't say anything at all):
I bought RH9 about a month ago and configured a dual boot system with my windows XP. Well, I never use it, so I decided to get rid of it. I stupidly used Partition Magic and deleted all the Linux Partitions and combined the extra space with my Windows partition. I rebooted and once everyhting was done It started to boot, but instead of going to windows it went to a Zombie version of Grub. It looks kind of like DOS as it's black, with white text, and demanding commands. Well I've tryed every single command on the list of commands I could try, and none of them would boot windows. I tryed booting from the instalation disk and all I got was "do you want to setup windows" And my friend is making me a emergency boot disk. All I want to know is is there anyway to boot from this Zombie version of Grub using its listed comamnds? I also would Like to keep all the information I have on my computer and not have to reformat( I have delicate files I didn't back up.) And please, don't say I'm stupid, I already know I am. |
There should be a repair utility on your winxp disk,(my win 2000 disk does) just type fixmbr and that should solve your problem.

reapir utility? Hmm...I already tried using repair on the disk, like, "press r to repair." there isn't any command line or console as to where I could type that. I'll try again though.

Sorry to double post, But I tryed using the recovery console, but when I selected the windows I wanted to fix it asked for a Admin password...I don't ever remember setting an admin password. for anyone who's tried this have you ever not set an admin password for your machine, and then get asked for one?

boot from the windows xp cd - go into repair mode and then type: fixmbr at the prompt.

Well...thanks, that worked, I did Fixmbr...and now, when i restarted the comupter, it said "Trouble accessing operating system" is it all over?

How much do you have installed for XP? Is it possible to backup all of your data to another partition, then reinstall XP?

trying reinstalling redhat as dual boot then back up all your stuff and then reformat everything. only thing i can think of if fixmbr didnt work:Pengy:

How would I back up everything to another partition? I have only 2 partitions,some dell crap one taht's like 32 meg, and then C:. Is there a command in the recovery console that I can do that? Because otherwise i just get a "Error loading Operating System" whenever I boot.

Um, use Partition Magic, split your partition into two, and then move the data there?

....I can't load anyhting on my computer.... Nothing, zip , notta, all I can do is use the recovery console on my xp disk. Windows XP will not work, and Linux is long gone.

Sorry for you, I also have Thinkpad with XP and only with luck I managed
to Dual Boot, A few months later using partition managing I deleted by mistake the Linux Partitions, Had to reintastall everything, I have "Red Hat 8 Unleashed" The book is rather difficult. Now that RH is changing, I am leaving Options Open. Question: How do you go from one Dist to another? From Red Hat to Suse, for example? With all the Software and files I have, Thanks Sam |
