I screwed up royally with Gnome help

Ok, to install GTK+2.2 i uninstalled GTK bad move #1 I believe. I was in Gnome and all my desktop icons dissapeared and no programs would work. I lucklily succeeded in installing GTK+2.2 therefore I rebooted hoping everything would be fine. Well it works, but I get loaded into another desktop, so I log out to choose which desktop Id prefur (gnome) well Gnome doesnt show up so I have to choose KDE. How do I fix it so Gnome works?
Thnx.
