I need to view a mysql database

I'm running Redhat Enterprise (or GNU/Linux if I run uname).

I need to view a mysql database. I have the password, but I don't have a viewer and all of my attempts to install one have failed. I tried navicat and iSQLviewer and neither conformed to the "useful thread and information about installing".

Alternatively, I could ftp the files off the machine and view them on a windows machine, but I was trying to do it properly. Also, the machine is refusing ftp connections and I haven't bothered trying to enable them yet.

Any help (or suggestion of a mysql viewer/editor that will play nice with this Redhat distro) would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by view a MySQL DB?
You can look at the tables from the cmd line by logging in as per Chap 3 of the Docs: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/tutorial.html

Maybe you want a GUI eg: http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php

I should have looked for a command line tool to begin with. I need to get out of windows mode.

Anyway, I'm going to sleep a lot better tonight. Thanks

Linux is a tool, not a commercial product, therefor things are made as efficient and powerful as possible. (I didn't say easy though)

About compiling from source: maybe you have not completely kept up with developments in Linux, but most distributions come with an excellent package management system which almost never require compiling from source. Red Hat / Fedora and many derivatives use RPM, Debian and related distros use Apt.

Yes, that was the last thing I tried to do, but the box refused to connect to the Redhat servers properly. Maybe the address I'm trying to connect to is out of date. On a good note, these Redhat boxes are minimally important web servers only, so I was just using them to get my feet wet. I may try set up new machines to replace these.

Anyway, thanks again.
