I need my graphical display back!
Hi, I need any help on this simple question ( I am new to linux).
After booting up my Redhat Linux, my screem shows me to a text command mode. I want to have my graphical display mode back. How do I do that? This is what I see on my screen host login: _ (The rest is a black screen) How do I change it to a graphical mode type? For example there are icons on the screen. Please help!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! |
Does the system try to start the xserver, if so do you get any errors. Also make sure that the default runlevel in /etc/inittab is set to 5 and not 3.

'startx' is the command you want. this will only work if you have X installed.
If its not installed, i cant help you as your using fedora (which i know nothing about) |
Oh yeah, I wanted to start my screen in GNOME mode. How do I do that?
|
Was your system starting in graphical mode before?
|
Hi,
Yes, it was. BUt now it is in the text command mode. I think its grub if I am not wrong. I want to have the GNOME mode back-> this is the graphical mode right?? With the icons and the windows bars at the bottom. |
At the command prompt, type in your user name and password, then "startx". If the gui starts fine, you will need to edit /etc/inittab as root and change the default runlevel from 3 to 5. If you get any errors when you run "startx" just post them.

OK, I am gonna try out your method and BE RIGHT BACK! THanks alot!
