jay73, thank you for the reply. Like I said in my OP, I'm not just trying to install a program. I'm very aware of the yum installer, and was just trying something a little more adventurous. Foolish, it may be, and yes I am new to Linux, but seen as a reformat doesn't bother me, I can contently mess around with it.

Thanks for the resources though! My reading pile has become substantial now.
