I need a simplistic file manager
I am looking for a simplistic manager. I do not need any icons or thumbnail features. Just something that displays filenames in text mode (not icon, not tree) with file size and type.
When I click on it, it would launch accord to the program that supports it. So if I click on a music file, it would automatically play in XMMS. Also, it has to be able to right-click to copy and paste files. Since it has so basic needs, I expect it to be very lite. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
Its not quite what your asking for, but Midnight Commander (aka MC) is very close to what you are asking for, and some people swear by it. Most Distro's have an MC package, so you shouldnt need to do anything to awkward to get it either.

Appearantedly, Midnight Commander is CLI. I am looking for something that is GUI so I can use my mouse to point and click.
Also, it is twin window. Something I forgot to mention not to be included. |
XFE, XFFM, ROX-filer are all light weight file manager, not sure if they meet your requirements. Personally I love ROX.
|
I just tried ROX, and I cannot turn off the icons. Also, in list view, it forces me to keep the permission, ownership, and last modified column. Something that users pay almost no attention to.
XEF and XFFM too have icons. I am looking for something that looks like a plain window. Files listed in text view. Showing only filename, type, and size as the details. No icons. And as GUI so I can click on it. |

Emelfm is what you're looking for.
Lightweight, really nice. It doesn't have icons, and you can customize columns so it shows the filename, size, but not type -- you have to figure that out from the extension. It has some menus and stuff at the top, you didn't mention if you want them, but you could probably modify it to not have them. `apt-get install emelfm` on debian. Konqueror has a text mode view mode.
|
try Tux Commander
twin panel and yo ucan configure which programs open which files it's pretty much mc in GUI --sorry. just noticed you don't want twin panel |
Try gentoo. A clone of DirOpus from the Amiga.
|
Dopus was also twin panel, so probably not what he was looking for. Interesting that there is also a package called gentoo, I wander which was named first, the package, or the distro?
|
Surprise: Konqueror
Make a shorcut to "Save profile..." command. Make carefull changes in settings of Konquerror - i.e. hide menu, hide tree, split view into two parts, change views to text mode, get rid of icons you don't need and extensions and plugins you don't need. Save the profile! It's fast (bla bla DCOP), configurable, although not that lite and much more powerful thaan you wanted :-( Quote:

Not that this proves anything. |
Just found this note at http://www.obsession.se/gentoo
[*] Gentoo the Linux distribution has nothing to do with gentoo the file manager, except the latter runs on the former. I actually used the name first of the two, way back in September 1998. I've been in touch with the Gentoo folks, and we're cool. |
