If you want easy installation download apt from here:

http://apt.freshrpms.net/

Once this is downloaded open up a console or xterm (like a dos command line) by clicking on the hat then System Tools ---> Teminal cd to the directory where you downloaded apt and issue the following commands

su
password for root
rpm -ihv apt*

Once the rpm is installed then issue the following commands:

apt-get update
apt-get install synaptic

Then under the System Tools menu you should see Synaptic open it up do a search on xmms you should see something like xmms-mp3 click on install then do a search on mplayer and mplayer skins click install, go to the top and click on Proceed.

Done deal now you will be able to play mp3s using the Audio Player aka XMMS and to watch videos use Movie Player aka mplayer

Good Luck and Welcome

In my opinion Knoppix is a much better distro for newbies than any (IMHO) RPM-based crap. It boots directly from CD straight into a fully working desktop and has most of the stuff a newbie needs. The best thing though is the fact that it's based on Debian and has all the advantages of it. APT is there by default (don't know about Synaptic since I don't use GUI's much but it should be there) and the harddrive installation is easy enough for braindeads.
