I lose my sound on restarts

I have a problem I think with alsa. To set up alsa I typed in alsaconf in the terminal. After that all my sound works fine. However when I restart the pc and go back into linux I cannot hear any sound so I have to do the alsa procedure again. How can I stop alsa loosing my sound settings?

Btw, when mepis boots up it displays errors about upgrading the bios but I am using the most up to date bios for my mobo.

You have to find an alsa statr up script which would store and restore the mixer settings. Your distro might already include such a script. If not, you will find scripts for the most popular distros in alsa package. Modify one of those to suit yuor needs and include it in the startup list so it starts and restores the setting automatically.
About the BIOS upgrade message I think you can safely ignore the message.

The command is ususlly 'alsactl store' after after adjusting alsamixer settings.
