I have a question regarding windows prgrms

I would like to run some BBS software for Linux called Synchronet, and a few other other Windows programs Like ICQ and AIM instant messengers. I have downloaded the program Wine. What is the next step in this process. Like running other e-mail programs like Eudora and the such?

Sure would like to get my e-mail program running again without any problems.

The very best thing to do is, to avoid running Windows applications under Linux unless you just have to. For example, you don't need ICQ or AIM at all... install Gaim or Kopete which are Linux native applications _and_ run ICQ, AIM and MSN protcols in one application at the same time (kinda like Windows' Trillian).

This site will help you to find the equivalent program for Linux:

http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-l...en/table.shtml

All I can say is... if you need to run too many Windows applications in Linux, it's just better to stay on Windows. There's no point in using Wine to get applications half-running (or not running at all) with so many good native applications available for Linux ^_^

Hi and welcome to LQ!

Ok, well, I'm assuming that you want to run windows programs on linux. May I suggest that before you continue, you look at alternatives to these "usual" programs (such as ICQ, email etc) on http://freshmeat.net - search for the keyword such as "ICQ" etc.

ok. So, after all that, you still want to install wine. Great! That's fine. here's a link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...to&btnG=Search
and: http://www.winehq.com/site/howto

hope this helps. Ask any questions about this as you like. I'm here to help. What distribution are you using btw?

Retouching on the finding programs that are windows equivalents -
firefox is great as a browser- it's more secure than IE.
gaim for messenging - you can talk to many protocols, like AIM, MSN, etc.
email stuff there is a TONNE of info about this- try thunderbird, evolution, pine, mutt, etc etc.

check out these links:
http://www.linux.ie/newusers/alternatives.php
http://linuxshop.ru/linuxbegin/win-l...en/table.shtml
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...ux&btnG=Search

like one of those sites says- windows trys to put everything in one package. With Unix, the goal is to have effective "lego blocks" that work together really well.

Again, if there is anything you need clarification on, just ask in this thread.
