Why would you want to access an individual file within the iso before it's burned anyway? You take the .iso file, and burn it onto a cd. Once thats done..you can see all the individual files on the cd. Reboot and it enters the setup...

Here are the steps I do. Nero is up and running.
Goto file, goto Burn image, choose what iso to burn, write CD page comes up, asks what write method etc. Click on write, then two windows come up, the one that would show the burn process, and another that asks where to save the image file. It wonn't let me save it to the cd. This is the whole problem. So it just starts to burn or copy the image to the hard drive. And I have uninstalled and reinstalled nero.

for starters whats the iso files names you downloaded.
also is it cd or dvd version of mandrake 10.1

to burn cd iso open up Nero Express > select CDRW (up the top in dropdown menu) for the recorder you would like to use.

Then click on Disk image or saved project

go though folders and click on iso for disk 1 then put in blank CD R then click next then once its done, then do the same for the other 2 isos.
make sure u label disks mandrake 10.1 cd 1, mandrake 10.1 cd 2, mandrake 10.1 cd 3 with a special cd-dvdr marker pen.

then after you have done burning isos then you can backup pc or use another pc to go ahead with the graphical installation of mandrake 10.1,which is very easy to install.

You know, after reading this entire thread, I thought that you were maybe a beginner to computers (sorry no offense), but then I got thinking that I ran into this same problem with Nero. I had installed Nero on a laptop at work without realizing that the laptop did not have a burner installed. Once I acquired a burner and tried to run Nero, it didn't see the drive and always tried to save the image. Had to reinstall Nero in order for it to see it.

I apologize, but I don't know what screens to go to, but there is a place in the menus that will allow you to select the device to burn to. Check to see if your burner is listed in there and switch to it. I know you were successful at burning the ISO's, just a little something to check.

I already pointed that out with my previous post

btw i've been burning linux iso's since old nero versions.
i don't think the version makes any differance as long as it has nero express.
BUT
i do know there is nero normal and nero ultra and both are similar same with nero powerpack.

Anyway got to the video selection, and the next button and back button just disapeared. So here we go again.
This is making Windoze look real good.
Why can't linux be as logical as windows as far as the video stuff goes?????

Wow so far looks real good, and the web browser is way better than Netscape in 2.2 caldera.

So how do I network and share files with my windows pc's? They are networked and the ether net is working just fine on this linux box, cause that is how it goes on the internet. I don't see any "network neighborhood" icon to click.

I would like to see the other desk tops I had chosen at setup time also.

Well done Bill Johns.

I've been trying to think of why you may have been having such a battle, but for the life of me, I can't.

It may be that I was lucky when I started with this linux "thing". Sure, the very first distro I tried (SuSE 8.0 if I remember correctly), I was given burned copies, then yes, I did hit a brick wall because the config for the speedtouch USB ADSL modem I had was so far over my head as to be out of sight.

My brother came over and got it configured.

After that, I found mandrake (8.2), which alledgedly had support for my modem (the only distro to support it directly). Suffice to say, the bloody modem support was broken and I had to spend about 2 weeks on and off, getting it working again.

Any other subsequent distros I tried (other than mandrake) I always downloaded via windows, and burned them with Nero 5 - just following some online instructions I found via google (don't forget, if you want to get linux specific stuff, use http://www.google.com/linux ).

When I actually installed the SuSE, then the mandrake, all I did was to put the first disc in and just boot it. I accepted all the defaults - I only had to make sure that it put the linux in the "spare" partition that my windows install already had (luckily).

One thing that might be worth your while thinking about, when I'd learned a little about mandrake, I decided that I liked it better than SuSE, so I didn't mind paying for "boxed set" discs direct from mandrake. Because it's a "paid for" version, it saved me lots of hassle as it had nvidia driver pre-installed/configured, plus a few other proprietary items (flash, adobe acrobat, realplayer, etc etc). These all made life easier, and reduce the pressure of the "learning curve".

You could currently get the "combined" mandrake/connectiva (post takeover) 10.1 (ha!, even with a free "fluffy" penguin) powerpack for about 80 euros (currently about 100$), which I think is good value. Sure, you could wait until the next version comes out, or even until "they" make the changes that they were "threatening" i.e. change the release numbering, apparently it was due to be come annual, rather than 6 monthly, so I presume that the next one would be something like 2005.0 (abit like how it's done with gentoo).

Though if you just want to learn the major app's or something, then you'd have to "bit the bullet" and learn K3b disc burning or something. The benefit of that being that it's a lot easier to check the md5sum's and make sure anything you download doesnt' seem to be corrupt before you actually burn the file(s).

Now you have the mandrake installed, one thing I would suggest, is that when you've got your head round "the workings", in the mandrake control centre (on the task bar as "configure my computer"), theres the software manager. The graphic version is RPMdrake (+ for adding software, - for removing software), which work from the mandrake package manager called URPMI. If you visit the easy urpmi site, and just follow the instructions, you will be able to set up the mirror sources locations so that you have the widest available range of software in the form of "mandrakised" rpms which will make you life installing any software so much easier (and yes I ALWAYS stuck to mandrakised RPMs, because it meant that any potential problems with dependencies etc - which can be a SERIOUS pain in the arse).

Good luck and see you around the forums

regards

John

Good network access, excellent.

If you have the pc's all set with the same group of internal IP addresses e.g. 10.0.0.1 gateway, with the linux one being 10.0.0.2 and the windows one(s) 10.0.0.3 and so on, as far as I can work out, it should (in theory) "just" be a case of installing and setting up SAMBA - I say "just", because I've only recently been looking into that, so my partner can plug her laptop into our network and she can print from it (W98SE based thinkpad).

So, I can only suggest that you look into SAMBA (the file and print sharing server utility) which should enable you to do that. As for the config/setup, that's a different "cup of tea"!

regards

John

All my windoze PC's are running DHCP and connected to a router. I can transfer files and run programs from one to the other.
I don't even know where on Linux to go look for the files in the other pc's? All I can figure is you have to mount them some place and some how as a file system to be able to access them.
I know this Mandrake box is on my network, cause I'm usning it to type this. Now I would like to access my other pc's.
I agree with you, I like the looks of Mandrake. And once I got past that video stuff, all is good. I had to go to the Compaq website and luckily they had the specs, for the video system.
It funny though, that Caldera had no problem "self" detecting and choosing the proper driver. All the gui installers for the vairious distros need a good "back button" system. My system crashed a couple of times in the video test. So then had to go back and start from square one. To the point of reformatting and everything. I tried to just install. But it complained that there was no root partion????? So that tells me the installer adds the root partion at the very end of the install process. I guess that makes sense since it has to build the kernel at the very end.
Yeah it took at least 5 trys.
I sure do like Unix / Linux over all the rest though. The most powerful Operating system of all them. Gosh I bet all the others have copied bits and peices of Unix.
Yeah would love to do a Linux box in my wifes office for all to use, I'm getting tired of all the spyware etc they get into.
Problem is I would have to figure out how to capture the power off. Maybe an internal battery back up or something. Cause I can just see them not wanting to wait for linux to shutdown.
Any good ideas for that?

I'm asuming that Mandrake installed Samba here. If that is the case, to view a 'Network neighbourhood' type view, load the KDE file manager (you can do with by using the home icon) and in the location bar, type 'smb:/' 9without the quotes). As for your shutdown problem, I'm not sure - I run Gentoo and it can be shut down within 5 seconds of me issuing the shutdown command and then the computer turns itself off.
