Thumbs up i destroyed my lilo......um...help.

hi. running rh9 which installed grub by default was happy, dual boot w/ winxp, was happy. later---apt-get got into a fight with rh's rpm thingy and lilo got installed and grub didn't work anymore, still, fairly happy. but, I decided to uninstall lilo to see if grub would work again (a Learning thinG) and now on boot it just goes...
LI..
LI..
LI..
LI..
so, after some net hunting and rescue disk inserting it seems I just need to boot off of cd into resuce mode and chroot to the sysimage then type 'lilo', which will reinstall it and make everything happy again!....but...I want a second opinion, and this prob won't work anyways due to aptget and rpm's catfighting al over my system about where sh*t goes. Thanks, c. (oh yeah...please help!)

the idea of booting off a rescue disk, chroot'ng and running lilo is correct. If the execution of 'lilo' goes off without a hitch you should be set to go.

grub-install <device> will install grub on <device>
example: grub-install /dev/hda

I tried the grub-install thing, didn't quite work because some relic of lilo was still trying to boot from hda, so booted from rh9 cdrom and went through settup till I got to the insatll new boot loader, did that which gave me lilo back, then just had to go in and config lilo and everybody was happy. I like grub better too, which is what got me into this mess...I will attempt it again later. btw, there were plenty of websites dealing with configing a corrupt lilo while it was still there, but none (well, hardly any) if it wasn't. thanks for your help.
