I can't "service squid start" , and chkconfig squid on not working

Dear people,

I tried to use "service" to start, stop squid, but it couldn.t. Below is the things I typed:

[root@matrix sbin]# ls
squid
[root@matrix sbin]# service squid start
squid: unrecognized service
[root@matrix sbin]# chkconfig squid
[root@matrix sbin]# chkconfig squid on
error reading information on service squid: No such file or directory
[root@matrix sbin]#

As above, it stated "unrecognized service"

However, the command " /usr/local/squid/bin/squid -NCd1 " worked to start squid.

What is the reason for the above error?

Thank you very very much in advance.
