I can't run any thing with admin previlages, except in the terminal using sudo.

hi.
I am new to linux, I have ubuntu 6.06 LTS distro. latley I have been on the net trying to find a way to install lime wire. I have been cheking some suggetions to earlier problems, and tried to use them, which gave me this problem.

I can't run any thing with admin previlages except in the terminal using sudo, but I can't go on and do every thiing in the terminal, for example I need to write to a folder, delete a folder, save a file in a folder(/usr/lib) and it keeps telling me you can't save, delete, or write because you don't have an admin prev.

help please

You should be able to do anything you want in your own user /home directory.

To add/remove/edit anywhere else in the system requires root admin privilege.

If you are trying to install software, and you want to use a graphical application, use Synaptic. It is GUI, and it will prompt you for the root password. Then you can select software to add/remove.

thank you,

but my problem is not writing into my home files, but to system files. and you are right I should have installed it from the repositries. but it is done now and I installed it after great deal of problems, and now jre resides in /usr/java/jre1.6.0_05.

the problem is that lime wire still gives me a dependancy problem saying that jre is not installed, and I read somthing about correcting the home path of the jre.

what i read was this (
echo JAVA_HOME=/path/to/jre >> /etc/profile (substitute with JRE_home as required)
echo export JAVA_HOME >> /etc/profile (substitute as required)
source /etc/profile
)

so I was trying to echo JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.6.0_05>> /etc/profile
and the terminal says permission denied. I even tried sudo echo JAVA...
and still permission denied.

do you notice any thing wrong in what I've done so far please help.
