I've got it sorted.
 
Hrmmm....strange. For some reason my video card does not like use of the frame buffer. I turned frame buffer off upon boot and now it works! :D

Somehow, when the kernel uncompressed and switched to frambuffer mode and interupt was sent to the CPU and the system rebooted. Remedy: turn off frame buffer.

....see my earlier post to find out what the hell I am talking about. (RH7.2 on a cyrix 100). I accidentally clicked 'Post new thread' instead of 'Reply'!
