i'm back....

Well I had linux finaly installed. And the whole system started up. I had some paswords set during the instalation of redhat 7.2 and during the login after the installation i did not get what i had to type as pasword, because the words i typed in where everytime not correct. Therefor i did the installation over 6 times and everytime i had the same problem again. The problem was that i did not know that the whole name you typed in during the instalation was not mented for the loginname, but the name, the frontname was the loginname, so i finaly understood that and got in linux a several times.
BUT...........
After the few times i booted up, it would no longer boot up fully and stopped when it said bad acces thro block 2 or something like that, it was something about the harddrive if i understood it good.
And therefor i reinstalled linux again some severaltimes.
After the third time the whole system worked again and i could get in linux.
I;m not realy fermiliar with Linux, but i found little by little the way thro linux.
I know how to instal RPM packages, and how to get in the linuxcongiguration, abnd some other little not to advanced stuff.
Well, i installed some RPM pakages and tried to found out how to get the ethernet card installed an configured.
Well, i followed the help and chanced the Host name and filled in some other stuff in about IP adresses and sort of stuff.
Well, after i rebooted again i won't no longer get into linux and can get no further than the login, (it looks like MSDOS). Well, the only thing i know is how to acces Linuxconfiguration there and i changed many things there wich i thought that could give me a normal startup again so i could acces linux gnome enviroment again.
Well that totaly failed.....
I.m still not coming further than the bloody msdos like enviroment.
I thought, hey i just go install linux again for the hundred time BUT, what ever i do it won't start the boodup cd.
If i use the bootup disk than it will boot up till the MSDOS like enviroment again and thats something i totaly do not want to go to.
Pleaze help me out!!!!

Is there anyway that i can reset someting so i can use the boot up cd again so i can install linux again.
IOf you got a better idea, pleaze tell me.....

Thanks in advance

Boots to text prompt

Booting to the text prompt is not a bad thing. If you want to start the graphical user interface, and if the X (that's what the GUI is called in Linux) was configured already during the installation, all you have to do is log in with your user name and password, then issue the command - startx.

If X was not automatically configured, then you will have to do your homework about the hardware inside your computer before attempting it.

Hope this helps.

Nice to see someone who is just starting out!

well....

oke thanks for the advice, but as unpation as i am, i removed the linux partions with microflop Fdisk and made an msdos partition, so the cd boot will work again so i can install linux all over.. Welll.... that is what i'm trying to do lol.
Thjanks anyways, i can use that advice from you ion the future when i got linux installed again and get booted in text mode.

Many thanks....

HI, when you are at your MSDOS like environment (Bash or something like that) you might want to try the mc command. It starts the midnight commander, which is very much like old days norton commander. Anyway, it's an easy way around the various files you can edit (I say "can", not "have to" :D ).
Have fun and check back often at the forum, lots of help around here.
