I'm a NEWBIE Can't figure this out!!!!
 

I have been tryin to create the separate partition for linux on my second HDD that I use for storage and when I use Partition Magic 8 I get "ERROR 1513 Error 1513: Bad attribute position in file record". Then I tried to do a manual partition creation using druid when I tried installing Red Hat 9 and it kept saying can't allocate as primary drive or something to that effect....PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

yes some time error come in Partition magic.
its look like that u want to multiboot yours system may already running any microsot OS and u wnat ti install linux on second HDD, which u were using for bacckup.
u did not menssion which os u already running, any way if u r running Wondows 200 or windows XP , can use Disk managment tool for creating a new partition.
if 2nd hdd has some data and it has only one partition then temporary move data on first HDD,
For installtion Redhat 9 on already running and Microsoft OS and u want to mutiboot then its better do not creat any partition for linux just leave some free space in GB's .
During redhat insttation usethsi option for partition.
autometic partion, then dont delete any old partition use free space

I am running Windows XP Pro on my WD 40 gig which is my primary slave (hdb) drive. I want to install red hat 9 on my samsung 120 gig which is my primary master (hda) drive. It will not let me create a new partition with Partition Magic. It keeps giving me error 1513, so I defragged and ran CHKDSK, but this did not help at all. Please someone help me. DISK DRUID would not work either, or maybe I don't know what to type as the mount point or something.

What error does it display when you run Disk Druid? I never have any problems with disk druid. I've also read that if you run Partition Magic make sure all your anti-virus software is turned OFF.

It says when I try to make partition during install of RH9 : "Partitioning failed: Could not allocate partitions as primary partitions"

I tunred off system restore, Norton AV is disabled, and I ran all the disk check utils but still partition magic 8 gives me error 1513!!!! FRUCK!!!!!

See if you can get yout hands on gdisk.exe from Norton (It might come along with GHOST) - It is a command line and very easy to use utility that should solve your problem... REMEMBER TO BACKUP ANY IMPORTANT DATA!!!!! before trying to repartition your disk!!!

Alrighty I'll hunt for that now and let you know how it went. When I partition the drive should I put the linux partition at the beginning of that drive or after the 60 gb or so that I have of windows stufff on there. Keep in mind it is a 120 gb drive. I want to give 20 gb total for linux use. And when i make the swap should I put that before or after the root partition. HELP ME OUT

What kind of box do you have? Some older bioses can't handle a 120 Gb disk. I've even seen a 1.4 GHz exhibit this problem. Here are a few things to try:

See if there's another hard disk you can use to do a test of the install. If that works, then it's probably your bios.

Disconnect the windows drive entirely and try to install windows on the 120 Gb disk which will be set as primary. If that fails, then it's probably your bios.

LOL I'm positive it's not the bios. I just bought the comp. It's a Compaq 2.4 ghz with 800 mhz fsb, 512 mb 2700 ddr, and it came with the 120 gb in it with win xp home. I added antoher 40 gig drive and installed win xp pro on that one and i formatted the 120 and use it for storage. It works fine as that and it worked with win xp home on it.

When I got the computer the 120 gig had a restore partition on it and I got no restore cd's of win xp home. So if I had to restore it would come from the HDD. I was reading somewhere that this could be the problem, but it's totally reformatted as ntfs and I see nothing of the sort when I view the drive with disk management utils......

I have been reading up on this error 1513, and it seems that win xp ntfs files systems seem to all have this same problem so I am going to convert the 120 to fat32 then try to make linux partition. Ill let you know how it goes....

Yea, tell us how it goes. I have another idea as well but I'll wait until I hear your results. If formatting the drive to fat32 works and you get linux installed..that's good news! Because then afterwards, just convert the windows partition back to NTFS.

Well here's the story.....I tried to switch it to fat 32...It wouldnt let me....Then I tried to use Gdisk.exe but couldn't figure it out....Sp I said screw it and just let red hat auto partition and have the entire 120 gb, but after it installed whenever linux would load the monitor would shut off like there was a hardware issue, but I couldnt figure out how to fix it.....So I tried to boot into my Win XP pro but couldnt...So in all I ened up having to totally reformat both drives and start from scratch....I spent all weekend reinstalling win xp pro and all my apps....SO FUCK LINUX!!!!!!!!!PIECE OF SHIT

You're trying to run Redhat 9. That's great but until you've seen Fluxbox in transparent mode on Slackware you've not even graduated Linux school.

Come back, swagdogpsu69. Linux doesn't need you, but you need to know that until you can run Linux emulating Windows emulating Linux, you've not really tried serious computing.
