There are certain programs that do strange things with their windows. The most recent example is OpenOffice.org and even a brand new install of StarOffice7. OpenOffice.org happened first. When I open a program, it is like I zoomed into the top left corner of the window. It is so big, the only thing that appears on the screen in the window if File. The same with when I try to install StarOffice7. The first window that opens is zoomed in so much, I cannot even read the text that is telling me what to do! The only reason I know something is happening is because when I hit enter, the title on the Title Bar changes as the steps proceed. This is very frustrating and I have no idea what I could have done to create such a mess. I have RH9 and run KDE. Note, the same thing happens on Gnome. Any suggestions are certainly appreciated!
sure, here it comes: OpenOffice (so presumably StarOffice too) has an option to enlarge the layout, including all menu's etc. So I guess this 'zoom' value is somehow rockated in your configuration. Don't know where this value is in the config files, but if you can reach the options menu you can change this value back to normal...
Hi,
I imagine this option to be present, but how could it be set before the program is even installed? (In StarOffice's case.) Is there some sort of common config file that these programs may share? Dr. Watson, you may be on to something...
hmm this could be the case of course, but I didn't find any... Don't know where the global configuration is located, but maybe the guys on the openoffice forum can help you out?
You sound like you're having the same problem I am. I am pretty sure the problem isn't with your software per-say, but some incompatibility issue with TCL/TK and RH9.
Try installing aMSN and see if you get the same problem. If you do, odds are very high that the problem isn't with your office software. If you find a fix, please tell me too, because I need one, and quick! Thanks.
Oh, one other question: can you post your computer specs on here? I'm curious if there are any other similarities between both our systems to help pinpoint the problem, because I know many RH9 systems that run TCK/TK perfectly. Thanks!
Hi,
I am new to Linux and I don't know what TCL/TK is. Also what is aMSN? My specs are as follows:
RH9 Kernal v.2.4.20-30.9 dual boot with Win XP on a Dell Dimension 4600. 512mb ram, 80gb HD, 2.6mgz Pentium 4.
My problem happens on KDE and gnome. Interestingly enough, I have another machine running a dual boot but it is an older compaq and I have seen none of these problems.
Please let me know, I have been looking for a solution to this for a while and even thinking of going to Fedora (not that that is a bad thing)!
TCL/TK is a library of functions used primarily for GUI. Some applications use it to build their GUI...aMSN is just a Linux based version of MSN, which has the same problem as you do on your machine.
Right now, I'm thinking that the problem might involve having a "too-new" version of TCL/TK...I upgraded mine not knowing I had it installed already, and have had problems. Does anybody know the compatibility of TCL 8.5a and RH9?? I can't seem to figure out how to downgrade it so I can't test it to be certain.
You don't have a laptop, so the problem shouldn't be the graphic card as I had thought for a while...
If you go to /usr/local/bin/ there should be some files tcl.h and tk.h, and in these files the version number is there somewhere (I forget what you can search for to find them...just scroll down, it's near the top). If you have the same version as me, I think it's a good bet that a simple downgrade would work - the only problem is how! If anybody has idea's, please post!!!!!!! I need this fixed because I have to make a big program for school using Tkinter and this problem is greatly hindering me!!!
Remember I told you I have two machines running linux. One works without a hitch, the other doesn't. Both machines have
tcl.h v. 1.70.2.10 and the file is located in the /usr/include directory. On the machine that does not work, the tk.h file is contained in the same directory as tcl.h and is v. 1.39.2.4 both files are dated 2002/10/16. The interesting thing is that the machine that works does not contain a tk.h file. I am wondering if that file is the problem. Have you found anything out? What versions are the files you are working with. I am going to try some things and I will let you know if anything works, please do the same for me.
