hplip printer problem

I have an HP printer - C4200 series; Works fine in Slackware.
I am trying to get it to work in mepis-8.

Last thing done:
hplip and cups were both un-installed and re-installed with no errors
When I try to install the printer hplip raises the error:

Quote:

printer queue setup failed. Please restart cups and try again.

This was done more that once; the last time after removing and reinstalling both cups and hplip.

I tried to install the printer using cups and get the error:

Quote:

"Filter "hpcups" for printer "hp" not available: No such file or directory"

any help appreciated

I had a similar problem when installing a hp printer and I used an earlier version of hplip. Check your cups version and hplip version in your Slack and see if it is different in Mepis.

Thank you for the reply, Larry; I gave up on mepis, and installed Debian-lenny;
and hplip works like a champ

Adding the user to "sys" group will solve the first problem (at least it did for me). I'm still working on the second.

I have a solution for the second issue.

It appears that HPLIP is putting stuff in one directory /usr/lib64/cups/filter, but CUPS is putting stuff in /usr/lib/cups/filter. So to fix my problem I linked the following files into /usr/lib/cups/filter so CUPS can see them.

hpcups*
hplipjs*
pstoraster*
pstopxl*

It might not hurt to cross link all files so that the directories are mirrors of each other.

simlinking the first two : hpcups*hplipjs*

Did the job for me. As for the other two, they were already in lib/cups/filter folder and not in lib64/cups/filter.
