I just bought a HP Pavilion XT983 and it came with a bunch of pre-installed Win XP HE. I installed a second hard drive and installed Linux 7.1 on that second hard drive. Linux wont wont start X because of a video card problem. I could buy a video card and solve this problem but i would rather find out how to recognize the video card that is on the motherboard. I have more problems with sound and i am not looking to spend the money on a sound card to fix the problem. Looking for ideas...
I would check the hardware compatibility list on red hat's site and see if your card is supported by 7.2 before you buy a new video card. http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/
You might also want to check and see if any of the other distros support it. That is unless you feel that you must use RH or you just want a new card.
Okay, i just did a quick look into Hp site to find what kind of vid it is. It did not state it. Accept that its built in and not an AGP slot? Great info. So cheat and when your in winXP check out display settings and find out what kind of chipset loaded into windows. From their go check out the HDACL and see if it supported. You might need to do a kernel upgrade. we will see from their. cheers.
Did you get Linux installed on this machine (HP XT983)? I am having a similar problem; I'm trying to get Red Hat Linux v8.0 installed on a HP XT983. Also I have RH Linux v6.1 installed on another system, same model; it works fine, except it will not recognize the NIC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I never got Linux to load on that HP machine. I pieced together an old Dell and RH8.0 came up wonderfully. I pretty much exhausted my ways trying to put xp & Linux on that machine. So what i did was this. I used my computer with Linux on it for a month. I have never turned back. I left the HP for my wife and now i only use the Linux box. I would do that if i were you. I always wanted that windows security blanket...you dont need it. Should you want help with how to ween yourself from windows i can help you with that. sorry to dissapoint.
I now have RH Linux 8.0 installed on it. I no longer have XP on it. RH 8.0 looks wonderful! I have a problem with the sound and NIC. Any help would be great???
It has a Trigem Computer mainboard w/ BIOS: Phoenix 3.05 09/11/2001, VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) and a Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC. PLEASE HELP ANYONE!!!
