HOWTO setup Debian with TwinView and more...

http://www.sunstatemartialarts.com/debian_media.htm

not sure if this goes here or other places, but this is a help guide for anyone wanting to do what i have learned how to do.

not said real well, but basicaly this is a list of some of the conf. files and several URLs along with a list of things that need to be done to get a Media box working in Debian with Nvidia vid card useing s-vid to push movies out to your TV.

it is not in any particular order, but that will change over time i hope. i will go back in and do a full HOWTO someday in a very detailed step by step, well as detailed as my limited skills/knowldge alow.

the base hardware is AMD, Nvidia GeForce2 MX with s-vid, SBLive Values, IDE harddrives CDreader, DVD player.

nothing fancy, but its all there.

this covers setting up your /etc/apt/sources.list, installing Nvidia drivers, configuring XF86Config-4 to push the s-vid out in TwinView, and more.

all of the information is there to get a media box up and running.

i went with kaffeine over mplayer due to major problems with kde and mplayer.

in short when i tried to install mplayer after getting kde up, mplayer removed several libs from kde making it no longer work. then when i reinstalled kde it removed mplayer and the 2 libs that mplayer is dependent on.

after a round or 2 of this i had enough of mplayer and have found kaffeine to be extreemly easy to use and it installs perfect with zero issues from the start. so for me it was the way better choice. mplayer can collect dust on some server someplace far far far away from any of my systems after that mess.

enjoy, cretique, add to, what ever, just hope that links helps someone who is wanting to do what i have done. nice big learning curve, this should make it shorter for others i hope.

one more note about this. i have been thinking about it on and off today and came to the conclusion i want to put together a much higher quality HOWTO on this setup.

i would like to start with the install and go every step of the way. i would also like to add screen shots of every major step to include install.

is there a way i can get screen shots during install, or do i just need to break out my digital camera and go forward from there?
