How to use a .ppd file?

I have downloaded a .ppd file for my epson dot matrix printer. How do I use it?

While it is originally written for Gentoo users, a lot of the content of the Gentoo printing guide is valid for most Linux installations with CUPS/foomatic. I suggest you have a look at it.
