how to upgrade thunderbird 2.0 to 3.0 on ubuntu 9.04
HI,
anyone could guide me how to upgrade thunderbird 2.0 to 3.0 or the latest thunderbird at Ubuntu 9.04? and also guide me on how to backup my profile as well.
I prefer if you can guide me on using command line. Thanks.

First thing, do you realise that Ubuntu 9.04 is no longer supported and hasn't been since October 2010? My advice to you would be to upgrade to a version that is supported (e.g. 10.04) and go from there.
Yes. I did realize the Ubuntu 9.04 is no longer supported.
By the way, how if I not going to upgrade it? is there any other option?
If I going to upgrade, how does the upgrade will affect my computer? All my setting, cookies, files, software, thunderbird profile will remain the same or I need to re-install and migrate everything?
Sorry I am totally a newbie for Ubuntu. Please guide me step by step.

Ok, this may take a while. Please understand the more detailed answers you can give to any questions asked, by me or anyone else, the better help we can be.
How is your system set up with regards to partitions? Do you have a / and a separate /home? To see this go to System Monitor in your menu and open it. Then click on the last tab "File systems". This will show you what you have and will say something like /dev/sda1 / and /dev/sda3 /home if you have a separate /home partition.
If you have a seperate /home partition you are fortunate as you can, if you want to, leave it alone. If you don't have a separate /home partition then you will need to, and I would anyway regardless of how it is setup, make a backup of your home folder (including hidden files and folders).

I just remembered this nifty little application that updates Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird and a couple of others on Ubuntu. It's called Ubuntuzilla and the instructions on how to use it are here.
If upgrading from 9.04 to a more recent version is a little to much at the moment this will probably be a good second choice work around.

I think the issue of overall system security needs to be addressed. 9.04 is an old system, even 10.04 has a few vulnerabilities coming out lately that require attention by the end user
Not to mention the OP is, in their own words,
