how to upgrade glibc-2.3 to glibc-2.4 safely on RHEL4?

Hi,

Can any body help me what would be the best way to upgrade the glibc-2.3 to glibc-2.4 on RHEL3/RHEL4? As we know lots of application/daemons are dependent on glibc what would happen to them If I upgrade the glibc-2.3? dont wanna loose the services to be honest.

I couldnt find the rpm for glibc-2.4 RHEL3/RHEL4. My system is not registered at RHN so cant use up2date/yum.

I remember once i did upgrade this glibc forefully and got kernel panic error. so i thought its good to get some suggestions here. I would really appreciate if any boddy can help me in this regard.

Many thanks.

Sam

On package based systems you usually cannot upgrade glibc without breaking the system. RHEL/Centos 5.2 is on glibc 2.5.

You should really look at Centos instead of RHEL. Centos is RHEL with the logos removed. It is free to download/update but is still binary compatible with RHEL.

Thanks for your reply dear. You mean I should go for new installation of Centos 5.2? Can we upgrade RHEL4 to Centos5.2? what about the all serives ( apache-MYSQL-PhP, sendmail and others) running on the box? Will I need to take backup first?

waiting for reply.

Many thanks.

Yes, if you must have the newer version of glibc I would upgrade to 5.2.

Whenever you start doing anything major (or even minor) on a system, back it up.

The versions of almost all your services will be upgraded and SOME MAY have compatibility issues (mostly third party addon problems) or have configuration differences. You just have to look at exactly what you have running.
