Question How to test an email server without an MX record?

I need to test the postfix setup on my firewall machine, to make sure it's actually going to work (filter and forward). The problem is I don't have access to update the MX record to point to it. So when I send email to our domain, it goes to our old mail server, right around the server to be tested. Is there any way to send a mail message to a server by ip?

Here's one way:

Read RFC 2821

telnet ip address smtp

now you're connected to your SMTP server.

now use what you found in that RFC to compose a message, for example:

Connected to cooter.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 keithkris.com ESMTP
helo
250 keithkris.com
mail from: test@test.com
250 ok
rcpt to: someemail@domain.com
250 ok
data
354 go ahead
subject: test

just a test
.
250 ok 1050520336 qp 12583
quit
221 keithkris.com
Connection closed by foreign host.

I gave a similar explanation here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hlight=postfix

The only difference is I would type "telnet ip.add.xxx.xxx 25"
