how to tell linux where /home is

Hi guys,

I did a fresh install of Gentoo 2 nights ago, but I could only start fluxbox while signed in as root. The reason was that there was no ~/.fluxbox and ~/.Xauthority files in my home folder. I copied them over and it works now, but I'm not sure gentoo knows where my /home folder is. Is there something I need to do besides have /home in my fstab?

Thanx

Each user has their own home directory. Usually is is on /home, however some users could even have their home directories on another disk ( for example if you ran out of room ) or even on a networked drive.

Take a look at the /etc/passwd file. There is a field that contains the location of each users home directory.

Also check if your $HOME environment variable is set:
echo $HOME

Now this assumes that your system uses the /etc/passwd and maybe also /etc/shadow files for logging in. If you use NIS or LDAP then a central server may be providing that information when you log in.
