How to tell if vsftpd is running in Novell OES Suse 9
I'm using the default install of vsftpd. I've setup the config file and everything should be working however it isn't. How can I tell if it is running in Suse? How can I start and stop it? I've done all of this in RHEL but it seems to be different in Suse. /etc/inet.d/vsftpd stop or start doesn't work in Suse..

It is init.d, perhaps that is the problem. Otherwise, you can try the following:
$ ps ax | grep vsftpd
If it shows you a line like
3621 ? Rs 0:00 /usr/sbin/vsftpd
then vsftpd is running.
Vsftp is controlled by xinet, the superdaemon.
Check if the file /etc/xinetd.d/vsftpd exists. If so, edit it and change the line which says "disable=yes" to "disable=no".
After that, kick the superdaemon: "rcxinetd reload".
You should be able to stop/restart xinetd services using chkconfig. If you do chkconfig --list, it will show you a list of all the services that are configure to start and their run levels. For xinetd services you should be able to do chkconfig vsftp on, to start it and off to shut it down.
