how to tell if mp3 came out alright without an listen through?
 

hi. i was ripping some tracks from a cd via grip. a few of smilies came up. i got the one that meant read drift and one that meant normal operation but considerable jitter. I have a few questions from this.
1. is there a way to make sure the mp3s came out alright short of listening to them one by one? Is that something you could do in audacity by looking at the soundwave?
2. what is a read drift and how would it affect the mp3?
3. what is meant by considerable jitter and how would that affect the operation?

1. You wouldn't be able to see a skip yourself - maybe some software could analyse the MP3s and possibly find them, but it would be a slow process.

2 & 3. They may cause a skip, squeak or other audible error. I don't exactly understand what the errors are, but they're both bad.

My suggestion is to set grip to use full paranoia - this will use cdparanoia, which does everything it possibly can to avoid errors (e.g. re-reads sectors 25 times if necessary, slows down ripping etc.)
If you use full paranoia, then you're really doing all you can to prevent errors.

I don't know of any practical way of checking if an .mp3 has been burnt properly other then comparing the size of the file.

You could use waveform anylisis software or even an ocilliscope but you would still have to play each song in it's entirety so you may as well just listen to the songs...
